15 Colorful Winter Coats on Sale

A woman wears a colorful pink women's winter coat.

By Franki Hanke

January is a month of gray (or brown) depending on where you live. As January sales start discounting essential women’s winter coats on sale, I’m looking for colorful coats that can brighten my mood through the rest of this season.

Does color matter?

If you’re looking at the science, it’s not conclusive, because we just don’t have research on the specific question of “Does the color of the clothing we wear make us happier?”

However, some data supports the impact of colors more generally.

Want to be attractive? Wear red.

One study found that color changes perceived attractiveness, even when the actual color was obscured from the judges. So the impact of wearing the color made the wearer appear more attractive separate from the perception of the color itself. That’s a confidence boost in action!

Need some creativity? Wear green.

Viewing the color green enhanced creative performance in four experiments. Other experiments linked it with relaxation and comfort (likely due to the reminder of nature).

Really though, wear your favorite color!

Ultimately, the data on colors’ impact is limited, so opt for the colors that make you feel your best. Practicing some dopamine dressing can add energy to a month that’s often dull.

15 Women’s Winter Coats on Sale

When it comes time to find that colorful coat, there’s the challenge! Women’s winter coats, especially plus-size women’s coats, often default to the standard black, navy blue, and maybe olive green. Instead, I’m hunting for elusive coats & jackets in color!

Depending on whether you’re braving a New York winter or a Florida one, you’ll need a different kind of jacket! Jump to the right level with the links below.

Winter Coats, Puffer Jackets & Parkas

A magenta women's winter coat on sale from Land's End. It has a faux fur trimmed hood.
Land’s End Women’s Down Winter Coat – $195 (from $240)

Limited Sizes Left – XS to M

This long-line down jacket in Magenta Berry has a faux fur trimmed hood with a 600-fill power-down puffer style for intense insulation without overheating.

A light blue women's jacket on sale from Eddie Bauer.
Eddie Bauer MicroTherm Down Jacket  – $187 (from $249)

Wide Size Range from XS to XXL  including Petite, Tall, and Plus Sizes

This thin, but insulating down jacket in Dusty Blue is water–resistant with 800-fill goose down, but its minimal silhouette is packable for travel.

“It’s light enough to go under another layer if it gets cold. I love the fact that it zips into its own carry bag that easily stores in my day pack. It’s my fav transitional piece.”

If you’re less concerned with insulation The North Face has a similar, packable option with synthetic down in contrasting colorways that may be worth a comparison.

A long-line women's coat in teal.
Land’s End Women’s Expedition Winter Maxi Down Coat – $327 (from $385)

Sixes XS to XL – Plus Size Variant Available (1X to 3X)

For colder, wetter weather, the Expedition outerwear in Teal Shadow offers a waterproof shell and additional lining for more warmth. The long, maxi coat length keeps your butt dry if you’re sitting on snowy surfaces.

The zip front of long-line coats can be troublesome, but if you run cold they add a lot of extra protection!

“This is my second Expedition Coat. Although the old one still holds great after several years of rather heavy use, I decided it’s time to start using the old one for messier adventures in nature and to get a new one for a little dressier look around the town.”

This long coat in Faded Peach is only one of the fun, winter-busting colors Columbia offers. This mid-length coat uses a heat-reflecting liner for a lightweight with added warmth.

“I have the short version in purple frost. Loved it so much that I bought this long version in blue. Love the colour! Makes dark, short days happier.”

“I tested this jacket out in our first rainstorm of the season. It passed with flying colors. It’s not rubbery like some rain jackets. The zippered pockets are deep and kept my phone dry during the whole 2-mile walk.”

Top Coats, Peacoats, and Wool Coats

A soft rose-pink wool jacket for women.
Madewell Gianna Coat – $284 (from $338)

Limited Sizes Left – 8 and 16

“I’ve been looking for an oversized coat this winter; a coat that is not a slim fit, and this fits the bill perfectly. The material is of high quality and is comfortable and warm for cold Northeastern weather.”

A lime green and bright teal plaid long-line jacket.
Nasty Gal Green Plaid Coat – $142 (from $284)

Limited Sizes Left – 2, 4, 6 & 8

In bold green and blue, this plaid coat is a far cry from the classic tan plaid. It’s a polyester fabric that mimics wool better for mild winters.

Quilted Jackets & Other Light Jackets

A red quilted women's coat from Tommy Hilfiger.
Tommy Hilfiger Women’s Quilted Zip-Up Jacket – $60 (from $120)

Limited Sizes Left – S to XL

This classic Tommy Hilfiger Scarlet is a bold color that styles like a neutral with a raised collar. It is machine-washable for easy care.

“I absolutely love these jackets. They are warm stylish and not bulky perfect for the fall-winter season.”

A dark green-blue quilted coat with a floral inner lining for women.
Land’s End Insulated Reversible Barn Coat – $160 (from $190)

Limited Sizes Left – XS to M – Petite, Tall, and Plus Sizes Available (only 3X)

“This coat works well here in the lower Northeast part of the US where temps make this at least a three-season coat. Especially comfortable in the car.”

A petite sized green jacket that's on sale.
Calvin Klein Jeans Reversible Diamond Quilted Coat – $80 (from $160)

Only Petite Sizes – XS to XL

In two energetic colors Island Green and Electric Pink, this style-forward jacket has a contrast corduroy collar. When you’re not feeling color, it is reversible.

A checkered orange-tan puffer jacket sized for women.
Columbia Leadbetter Point Sherpa Jacket – $98 (from $130)

Plus Sizes Available (1X to 3X)

Synthetic insulation pairs with a Sherpa fleece jacket for extra warmth in a cozy, stylish shell. The loose silhouette is almost bomber jacket in shape. This checkered style balances trending, retro, and classic in a way that should fit into your closet for casual style long-term. The interior faux shearling on the lapel adds a cozy fur coat feel without all that bulk.

“I love this jacket, super warm and cozy, and very cute.”

A multi-colored monochrome jacket in blue-green on sale right now.
The North Face Cragmont Fleece Jacket – $105 (from $150)

Plus Sizes Available (1X to 3X)

When buying a coat, keep styling in mind. If you often wear heavy cardigans, puffer vests, or sweatshirts, you may want to size up your outerwear. If you’re sticking with leggings and a thin base layer underneath, opt for a close fit for proper insulation.

Prices in this article were updated at the time of publishing. Items may sell out quickly and exclusions may apply to sales mentioned. I hope this helped you find a women’s winter coat on sale for the rest of this year’s winter season (or to save on next year’s new coat).

Once you find a coat you love, the winter blues won’t feel so bad, especially if the right insulation makes it easier to get outside and catch the sun that does appear. Getting outside is one way to be a bit happier
